What Sizes Should I Order for a U8 Team?
For a U8 team, order mostly youth small and youth medium. Kids at this age (typically 6 and 7) cluster in those two sizes, with small covering the younger or slighter players and medium covering the bigger ones. Add one or two extras in each size for late joiners. When in doubt, size up. A slightly roomy jersey never bothered a 7-year-old, but a tight one will.
A typical U8 size breakdown
For a 10-player U8 roster, a reasonable starting order is 5 youth small, 5 youth medium, plus 2 extra smalls and 2 extra mediums as spares. Adjust if you know your roster skews young or old. U8 is the age group with the widest relative size range, since a just-turned-6 player and an almost-8 player can be very different sizes. Never guess from age alone. Our guide to Choosing Soccer Kits for Youth Teams explains why collecting real sizes beats age-based guessing.
How to collect sizes from U8 families
Keep it dead simple. Ask each family for the child’s usual t-shirt size: small, medium, or large. Most parents know this without measuring. Map t-shirt small to youth small and t-shirt medium to youth medium. If a parent says “between sizes,” order the larger one. Set a firm reply deadline and follow up once. You will still be missing two families on deadline day. That is normal. Order the extras to cover them. Why extras matter most at U8
U8 rosters change more than any other age group. Kids try soccer for a season, friends join because friends joined, and families move. Those spare jerseys in small and medium will get used. Also plan for growth spurts. A jersey that fits in August can be snug by May, so the medium extras double as midseason upgrades for your fastest-growing players.
