Should Soccer Jerseys Be Tight or Loose?

For young players, a kids soccer jersey should be slightly loose rather than tight. A relaxed fit lets them run, twist, and fall without restriction, and it leaves room to grow through the season. A snug fit only makes sense for older competitive players who want the streamlined pro look. The rule of thumb: if you can pinch about an inch of fabric at the sides, the fit is right. See our Kids Soccer Jersey Sizing Guide for the full fit picture.

Why Loose Wins for Kids

Kids play better when they forget what they are wearing. A tight jersey pulls at the collar, pinches under the arms, and rides up during sprints, and young players respond by tugging and fidgeting instead of focusing on the ball. Loose fabric also breathes better, which matters on hot tournament days. None of this means baggy: there is a big difference between comfortably relaxed and swimming in fabric. Our fit checkpoints show exactly where that line sits.

When Snug Is Fine

Older kids, usually 11 and up, sometimes prefer a closer fit because it looks like what the pros wear and it does not flap in the wind. That is fine as long as nothing pulls or restricts movement. For goalkeepers, a slightly roomier cut is actually the standard, since keeper jerseys are designed that way. Details are in do goalkeeper jerseys fit differently. If your child wants the snug look, make sure the shoulders and chest still pass the movement test before committing.
