Long Sleeve or Short Sleeve Jerseys for Kids?
For most kids, short sleeves are the default. They are cooler, lighter, and what young players expect a soccer jersey to look like. Long sleeves earn their place in cold weather or for goalkeepers who want a bit of extra coverage. When in doubt, go short sleeve and layer underneath on chilly days.
When short sleeves win
Spring and fall soccer in most places means short sleeves. Kids run hard, and short sleeves dump heat fast. They are also easier to find, easier to wash, and what teammates are usually wearing, which matters to kids more than parents realize. If you are buying one jersey for the season, short sleeve is the safe bet.
When long sleeves make sense
Late fall games, early spring mornings, and cold tournament weekends are long-sleeve territory. Goalkeepers often prefer long sleeves year-round for a little extra protection when they hit the ground. Some kids just like the look. There is no rule against it, and a long-sleeve jersey in a bold color looks sharp.
The layering trick
Here is what experienced soccer parents do: buy the short-sleeve jersey, then add a plain long-sleeve base layer underneath when it is cold. Your child gets warmth without giving up their favorite jersey, and the base layer works under any shirt they own. It is the most flexible setup for unpredictable weather. Our youth soccer gear checklist covers base layers and everything else they need on game day.
