How Long Should a Kids Soccer Jersey Be?

A kids soccer jersey should be long enough that the hem reaches the hips or the top of the shorts, roughly 20 to 26 inches from shoulder to hem depending on size. When arms are raised overhead, the hem should not ride above the belly button. That length keeps the jersey in place during play and meets most league tucking rules. Our Kids Soccer Jersey Sizing Guide lists typical lengths by size.

Why Length Matters More Than You Think

A jersey that is too short rides up every time your child sprints or reaches, which means constant tugging mid-game. Some leagues also require jerseys to be tucked in or at least long enough to stay down, and a short jersey makes that impossible. A jersey that is too long bunches at the waist and can get grabbed by opponents. The sweet spot is a hem that covers the waistband of the shorts with a little room to spare. This ties directly into overall fit, since length and body fit are decided by the same size choice.

The Overhead Test

Have your child put the jersey on and raise both arms straight up. If the hem lifts past the belly button, the jersey is too short, even if the chest fits fine. This is the most common reason kids outgrow a jersey while the width still works: they grow taller, the hem creeps up, and the jersey starts looking like a crop top. That is one of the clearest signs in when to move up a jersey size. Tall, slim kids often need to size up for length alone, which is another case for sizing up even when the chest measurement says otherwise.
