When Should My Child Move Up a Jersey Size?

Move your child up a jersey size when the hem rides above the hips, the shoulder seams pull inward, sleeves creep up the forearms, or the collar feels tight. Another tell: they start tugging at the jersey constantly during games. If two or more of these show up, the current size is done. Re-measure and check the chart in our Kids Soccer Jersey Sizing Guide before ordering the next one.

The Clear Signs

Kids outgrow jerseys in length before width. The first sign is usually the hem: when arms go up and the belly button shows, the jersey is too short (see how long a jersey should be). Next come the shoulders, where seams start migrating toward the neck, and the sleeves, which end above the wrist. Tightness across the chest is the last sign and means you waited too long. Do a fit check at the start of each season using our fit checkpoints so nothing surprises you mid-season.

Timing the Upgrade

The best time to size up is before the season starts, not after the first game in a too-small jersey. Measure in the weeks before registration, and if your child is at the top of their current size range, just go up. Growth spurts cluster around ages 8 to 12, so kids in that window deserve a fresh measurement every season. If the numbers land between sizes, sizing up usually buys a comfortable full season.
